When Alexis was 8 years old, her parents encouraged her to act in Houston community theater to combat her shyness; she starred in productions of The Wizard of Oz and Aladdin. While attending Saint Agnes Academy in Houston, Alexis was discovered by a talent scout for Company Management modeling agency. As of the age of 14, during summer breaks in high school, she relocated to Manhattan to work as a catalog model and traveled to cities such as Milan and Tokyo.
She also studied modeling and acting at the Page Parkes Center for Modeling and Acting during her teens. After graduating high school, she enrolled in NYU's Tisch School of Arts to study writing and directing for one year.

Alexis' first big-screen appearance was an uncredited bit part in Rushmore (1998). She was featured in Seventeen magazine, modeling prom dresses in 1999, and again in 2000 as a lip gloss model. But her big breakthrough came when she auditioned for the WB's hit show Gilmore Girls in 2000. Since she took on the role of fast-talking, witty Rory Gilmore, daughter of Lorelai (played by Lauren Graham), her fame has increased tenfold.
In 2002, Alexis starred alongside Ben Kingsley and Sissy Spacek in her first major big-screen role in Tuck Everlasting. That same year, she won the Family Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama for Gilmore Girls and was voted one of the hottest stars under 25 by Teen People magazine. In 2004, she appeared in the short film DysEnchanted and the Bollywood musical film Bride & Prejudice.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has slammed cruel comments about her fuller figure, saying she "loves her body".
The 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' actress - who was ridiculed for her curvy shape after unflattering photos of her in a bikini were released last week - insists she is happy being a US size two and attacked the Hollywood obsession with an unhealthy size zero.
Jennifer - who appeared much slimmer in a recent ad campaign for US clothing chain Hanes - fumed: "Size two is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size zero doesn't make you beautiful.
"I know what I look like and so do my friends and family. And like all women out there should, I love my body."
The 28-year-old star - who was enjoying a romantic break in Hawaii with her new fiancé actor Ross McCall when the pictures were taken - also encouraged women to embrace their shape and be proud of their curves.
She added on her MySpace page: "I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinised. To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image.
"To all the girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini - put it on and stay strong."

Scarlett Johansson is fascinated by men's nipples.
The 'He's Just Not That Into You' actress can?t understand why boys still have them, adding the concept of male nipples completely baffles her.
She is quoted by the Chicago Sun Times newspaper as saying: "The one thingI don't understand about men is nipples. I don't know if there is one aspect of men that I don't understand other than why they have nipples. Honestly, why? I guess it has something to do with the X chromosome.
"What is the function of the male nipple? Maybe we all start as androgynous creatures and then they become men?"
Despite admitting she is confused by some aspects of the male anatomy, the 24-year-old actress' bewilderment is not strong enough to turn her off men completely.
She recently revealed she is still crazy for her husband Ryan Reynolds - who she married in a secret ceremony last September - adding she is "in love with love".
When asked about the impact marriage has on relationships, Scarlett replied: "I have no perspective on that - you should ask me in 25 years.
"I am really in love with love. I'm a lover not a fighter. I'm a real lover."
